When a Small Business Needs SEO Marketing, Beware of Scammers

Whether you’ve owned a small business for decades or your business is brand new, at some point, you may run into scammers who will call and claim they can help you with Search Engine Optimization (SEO) marketing and get your business to the top of a search engine. Beware of these types of phone calls, emails, etc. How do you know when and how to find a reputable business who will help you with SEO marketing?

If you’re a business owner, an offer to “fix” or help you claim your Google listing may sound like the perfect solution to all your SEO marketing problems. Shady SEO companies setup these scams to target small businesses that want to rank at the top of the search engines.

To those who don’t work in the industry, getting websites to appear higher in Google’s SEO marketing results is a mystery, but one we know we need to solve for our businesses. That’s often where digital marketing agencies step in. These folks have studied Google algorithms and know the best ways to help us reach new customers. CBC has been in business since 2006, helping real business owners get real SEO marketing results.

While each scam differs, the same basic approach is used. You’ll hear one of the following:

  • Your website is not listed in Google, which could be costing you thousands of dollars a year in SEO marketing and lost business.
  • Your Google listing is not up to date, meaning that your website won’t be found in the search results.
  • Your website is at risk of being removed from the search engine results altogether.
  • The point of this phone call is simple: for you to accept the help of the company in exchange for a fee, often $1,000 or more.

The best thing to do when you receive a call like this is:

  • Hang up the phone as soon as you realize you are being targeted.
  • Never agree to speak with a live party.
  • Don’t provide any financial or personal information, such as your credit card number or Social Security number.
  • Report Google phone scams to Google via this link.

Prior to doing business with any SEO agency, ask if they have provided SEO marketing solutions in your market, but most importantly, if they have examples or references they can give you. They should be happy to provide them, along with a process for how to reach your specific goals under specific timelines. CBC works with many small businesses, helping them every day with SEO marketing and more.

Something to consider is that doing your own company’s SEO marketing calls for an ongoing time investment. You need to keep abreast of new developments in the field, test out new ideas and marketing campaigns, consider new keywords to target, analyze analytics reports, create new content, and so forth. CBC’s business architects constantly monitor emerging trends and are experienced researchers.
